6 Ways To Reignite Your Imagination!

6 Ways To Reignite Your Imagination

Sometimes we can fall into a creative rut. Here are six ideas for getting yourself out of your writing rut, and reigniting your imagination!

#1. Read:
I discussed this idea in greater detail in this post, but reading is one of the best ways to fire up your imagination! Reading fiction in particular has been shown to benefit mental health, and improve cognitive function. Introducing yourself to a creative new literary world, is a great way to reignite your imagination.

#2. Re-imagine the everyday:
This is a great idea, and it’s something we all did quite naturally as children. Imagining everyday objects or situations as extraordinary is an inherent quality in our young lives. As adults, trying to reclaim that ability can be difficult, but is so rewarding creatively, when we’re able to channel the child-like quality of seeing the world through new eyes.

#3. Take Risks:
Stretching yourself creatively can often provide a fresh new perspective to your imagination. For myself in writing, I find the best way to do this is to try a form of writing that is outside my usual writing habits. This can be establishing a blog exclusive to poetry, or writing weekly content on Wattpad. Whenever I take a writing risk, I find it helps me to open my mind to new possibilities, and reignites my imagination.

#4. Travel:
I’ve discussed this in greater detail in this post, but travelling can be one of the best ways to reignite your imagination. Exposing yourself to new situations, people, food, languages, and cultures, is the single greatest way to shed your preconceived notions, and to open your mind to new ideas. The most interesting, unique, and creative people I know, are also the most well-travelled.

#5. Embrace discomfort:
This goes hand in hand with travel, but I find one of the biggest things holding people back from being their most creative selves, is an aversion to discomfort. Anything new, or unusual, can often be frightening, and those people who are too afraid to try new things are dooming themselves to a less creative life. When you accept that learning, and exposing yourself to things that might make you uncomfortable, are simply part of a well-lived life, your imagination will light on fire!

#6. Experience art:
There are so many different kinds of artistic expression, and one of the best ways to reignite your imagination, is to experience a form of art different than your own. Go to the theatre, or the ballet, take in an art gallery on your lunch break, try painting, or drawing, or drawing on the sidewalk with chalk! The more you experience different kinds of art, the more your imagination will ignites!
